Relocation planning
How to handle the conversation
Talking points for when you raise this with my employer — what to ask first, what to do if it stalls, and the fallback if it doesn't work out at all. The detail behind each piece is on the US Citizenship and Canada pages if you want to go deeper.
What to raise with them
The core question, kept simple: would they move me to the US — sponsor a US work visa, most likely L1B, possibly TN — so I can relocate and keep doing exactly the same work, on the same account, without any change to the day-to-day arrangement. Nothing about the work changes, only where I'm physically based.
Worth naming directly that this is a real ask with real process behind it, not a casual one — PERM, petition, adjustment of status. The full breakdown of what that looks like is on theUS Citizenship page, if it's useful going into that conversation with the specifics already in hand.
That's the whole ask at this stage — just whether they'll move me. Don't get ahead of it by offering anything on salary before they've even reacted to the core question.
If they say yes
Great — that's the point to work out which visa they'd actually prefer to pursue (L1B vs. TN, since some employers are more comfortable with one than the other), realistic timing, and next steps.
If they hesitate or cost comes up
Don't offer anything on salary in the room. If sponsorship stalls on cost, that's the point to come back and check with me first, before any number gets put on the table — not to volunteer a salary trade on the spot. Once we've talked, there may be room to come back with something like keeping my current salary unchanged to take compensation off the table as a variable — but that's a decision to make together, not something to offer preemptively mid-conversation.
If it still doesn't work out
If sponsorship isn't happening even after checking back on salary, Canada is the option left — the fallback ask is simpler and lower stakes: whether it's possible for me to insteadwork remotely from Canada, under my existing Mexican contract, unchanged.
Worth being direct that this specific ask requires nothing from them — no new entity, no new payroll, no paperwork — just awareness of where I'd be working from. The full reasoning behind that arrangement, including the tax and contract details, is on theCanada page.
